Mr. Mustache Tea & Dessert (Burnaby)

Bubble Tea Burnaby Cafes Dessert

After hearing so many great things about Mr. Mustache‘s new Burnaby location, I am ecstatic to finally try it! Just located steps away from Metrotown Mall, this bubble tea house settles in a quiet, tucked-in space that was previously occupied by Cafe Joie.

The basic natural, bright, and wooden decor remains in their cafe, which makes the shop look spacious and comfortable. Light music and soft murmurs are heard overhead in this overall quiet study and hangout spot.

From what I understand, Mr. Mustache is known for their tea macchiatos that provide a fresh and solid flavour list, ranging from Japanese green tea, pu-erh, winter melon, black tea, earl grey, iron buddha, fruit teas, and oolong. I am a big fan of oolong tea, so I naturally gravitate towards their Osmanthus Oolong Macchiato.

Their macchiato drinks, called 奶緹 in Chinese, has slightly sweetened brewed tea that’s topped with a thick layer of creamy, milky foam. I especially like the tumbler that the cold drinks come in, since they are re-usable, portable, and adorable. The beauty of this type of drink is that you can really drink it however you want. I would recommend for you to drink this straight, without mixing, to fully enjoy the subtle tea flavour. It also makes the drink a lot more refreshing, since the tea is not weighed down by the richness of the milk foam above. If you like lattes, teas, or bubble tea, I would strongly recommend this drink on your first visit! It’s not too sweet, even with regular sugar, and you can really taste the tea and milk with each sip.

To pair with my drink, I got an adorable Caramel Bear mousse mini-cake to enjoy. The size looks small, but it’s made well, with fresh ingredients, and both the flavour and texture is light overall.

The outer layer of the cake is mostly composed of a light and fluffy caramel-flavoured mousse with a gentle dusting of bitter cocoa powder. Inside, I found a small mound of what seems to be a smooth caramel pudding, which all rests upon a disc of crunch bar-like chocolate. My only other opinion is that I would have liked to have more of that dark caramel, molasses-y flavour.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here, and the quality of their drinks really surprised me despite coming in with high expectations. For those who want a break from shopping, or to take your friends or partner for date night, this would be a great place to stop by for fantastic drinks and cute desserts!
